Opera is currently showcasing its browser ideas at the Upnorthweb conference in Oslo, Norway. the company demonstrated a hardware-accelerated version of the desktop browser, which we are scheduled to get on Thursday. There is also a significant emphasis on mobile browsing and bandwidth savings.
Opera has updated its browser for Android, which is now called Opera Mobile 11.5. The big news is not so much the change to the interface, which now shows bookmarks on the home screen, but the fact that Opera believes that it needs to promote Opera’s ability to compress data volume much more aggressively. In fact, if you are a heavy mobile web browser user, the data savings can be significant, and can be as high as 75%, according to Opera. Since we are heading into a time of tiered bandwidth charges, some users may find value in a browser that cuts their data usage. In Opera Mobile 11.5, the browser will show the user how much data was downloaded and how much was saved.
“For people on capped data plans, this is a handy feature to make sure you don’t max out reaching those slow, punishing network speeds you might encounter after using up your allowance,” an Opera developer wrote in a blog post.
We have not had a chance to play with Opera 12 with hardware acceleration yet, but we are promised to get an alpha version on Thursday.
