Apple Preps Performance, Feature Upgrades For Safari

Apple confidently ignores a trend toward accelerated browser release cycles and maintains the tradition to release updates for Safari when it has time and when it believes that users need them.

With the introduction of Safari 5.1 back in July, Apple dropped its longstanding claims that it is offering the world’s fastest browser and replaced its marketing phrases with arguments that Safari is a browser platform with powerful tools for developers.

There isn’t much focus on Safari these days and, unless you are using a Mac or you prefer Apple’s specific documents views, I’ll take a wild guess that you don’t have much interest in using it. Safari development heavily depends on Webkit development and on Apple’s marketing roadmap. It appears that Apple users will soon be getting some enhancements, as Google’s Peter Beverloo spotted Apple developers noting some JavaScript performance improvements as well as initial integration of the Web Audio API.

It’s not much and Apple still has a lot of work to do on the hardware acceleration front, especially as it interfaces with HTML5, WebGL and WebCL. Keep an eye open for a new Safari in the near future.
